The
primary mission of the Hands On Science Outreach (HOSO) program
is to develop and implement informal science and mathematics
programming for children from Pre-K through sixth grade.
HOSO,
a nonprofit (501c3) community-based program, provides science
enrichment that stimulates "science in your life"
awareness and the fun of active involvement in experiments,
games, music and projects. The program includes activities,
HOSO Adult Leader training and hands-on materials that go
home with the children.
The Concerned Black Men, Inc's (CBM) Science Committee successfully
sponsored our science program at the Levering Magnet School
and St. Peters Lutheran Church, Philadelphia, PA. The program
ran at the Levering school for eight weeks on Wednesday's
from 3:00PM - 4:30 PM with the participation of 25 students.
The program also ran at the St. Peter’s church with
the participation of 30 students for each school term.
The CBM Science Committee has sponsored overnight field
trips to the Delaware Aquatic Resource Center (ARE)
located in Smyrna, Delaware. The complex offers a 940-foot
salt marsh boardwalk, featuring a tidal marsh monitoring
platform, an outdoor classroom/pavilion, fresh water fishing
ponds, wetland habitats, canoeing and lodging (Mallard Lodge).
The ARE Center provides the scientific kits, equipment and
necessary items to complete ecological system experiments
at the complex.
The atmosphere is of fun and informal group interaction.
Participating students are extremely excited about the program,
and are simply outstanding at the way in which they handle
the experiments!
